Spread the Message: Make the Internet and technology more safe and useful for future generations. Promote safe
and secure use of online technology and mobile phones. Children, educators and parents should review the way we
use technology, think about our online presence and the way we represent ourselves in the virtual world. Support an
annual event to remind ourselves that we need to be responsible citizens in the digital world.

Plan a Digital Citizenship Event: In honour of this innovative venture,
sponsor a digital poster or online video contest. Posters and videos should
attempt to answer the question, What is Digital Citizenship? with content on
why we need to be good digital citizens and why we should be safe, ethical
and responsible users of technology.

Data Privacy Day / Data Protection Day [January 28]

"Around the globe, people use powerful technologies and devices every day to improve their lives. Businesses develop software,
build hardware and provide services designed to enhance individual productivity, communications and safety. We have come to
depend on mobile communications, instant access to information, and intelligent services. We are empowered by these
technologies in ways that those who have lived before us could never have imagined. Despite all of the benefits of these
technologies, doubts and worries persist about just how much personal information is collected, stored, used, and shared to
provide these convenient and pervasive tools and services. Data Privacy Day is an international celebration on the dignity of the
individual expressed through personal information. In this networked world, in which we are thoroughly digitized, with our identities,
locations, actions, purchases, associations, movements, and histories stored as so many bits and bytes... – Who is collecting
all of this – what are they doing with it – with whom are they sharing it? Most of all, ‘How can I protect my information from being
misused?"

National Cyber Security Awareness Month [NCSAM - October]

"Conducted every October since 2004, this event is a national public awareness campaign to encourage everyone to protect their
computers. The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) is a collaborative effort among experts in the security, non-profit,
academic and government fields to teach consumers, small businesses and members of the education community about
Internet security.

We lead Web-based, digital lives. The Internet has become pervasive; we are online at home, school, work, and play. In addition
to the traditional laptop or desktop computer, we now have many more gateways to the Internet. Mobile devices of all shapes and
sizes connect us to increasingly complex and useful tools almost everywhere and at anytime. Even when we are not directly
connected, the Internet supports our everyday lives through our financial transactions, transportation systems, power grids,
emergency response systems and a constant flow of communication, to name a few. This reliance will only increase as digital
technology becomes further entwined with how we live. If we are to achieve the potential of a digital society for robust and widely
available content, community, communication, commerce, and connectivity we must protect the resource that makes it possible. "
